Healthy Eating

Like many mums-to-be, you only want what is best for your baby.

Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet is one of the best things you can do to give your baby the best start in life. For more information click here

Your dedicated coach will help you to fine-tune your eating habits in order to supply both you and your baby with important nutrients such as iron, folic acid and other important vitamins and minerals.

Eating from a variety of food groups including, fruits and vegetables, breads and grains, protein sources and dairy products is a good way to ensure you stay healthy.

Whilst you can eat most things during pregnancy, there are some things to avoid or be careful of when you’re pregnant. There is a small risk that certain foods might make you ill or harm your baby’s development. These include some cheeses, some fish and some meats. Please visit NHS guidance for more information on foods to avoid during pregnancy.

The main source of vitamins and nutrients needed during pregnancy should come from your diet. It is recommended that you take 400 mcg of folic acid for two to three months before you get pregnant, and until you are 12 weeks along, when the baby’s spine is developing. Taking a 10 microgram supplement of vitamin D each day is especially important in pregnancy. This will help your baby’s bones, teeth, kidneys, heart and nervous system to develop.

If you are diabetic you will need a higher dose of folic acid. Find out more here

It’s important to consult your healthcare provider about which supplement is best for you during pregnancy.

Our Coaches Can Help

Mums also worry about holding extra baby weight after baby is born, which is understandable. Eating well during pregnancy will make it a lot easier to lose any excess weight after your baby has arrived. We’ll continue to support you during this time and work with you when you feel ready to get into a routine and eating or activity plan that’s right for you.

This special stage of life isn’t the time to diet, go hungry or skip meals. It’s a time to nourish your body to support your growing baby. Everything you eat, drink, breathe, say, think, becomes relevant in a whole new way!

If you are very overweight (BMI of 30 or above) our coaches can work with you to help you manage your weight while you are pregnant and can support you to lose weight after your baby is born.
